Amidst the backdrop of a pandemic, Shelton State Community College successfully launched an esports program. Esports, competitive, organized video gaming competitions with enormous appeal, is a billion-dollar industry that continues to grow. Creating a team was seen as a way to enhance the College’s student engagement and increase recruitment efforts.
When Health Information Technology (HIT) transitioned to a completely online format in November 2020, the program became the first in the College’s Health Services area to be available in this format.
One of five Alabama community colleges utilizing JumpStart AL training, Workforce development incorporated this virtual training opportunity as a free option for students.
The associate degree in medical laboratory technician at SSCC will prepare students for entry-level competencies necessary to perform routine clinical laboratory test in all major areas of the medical laboratory. It offers a balanced curriculum set to be completed in five consecutive semesters. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the National Board of Certification exam and become a nationally certified medical laboratory technician.
Bootcamp learning is an accelerated track to a career in technology. The bootcamps offered at Shelton State are career focused and help train the adult learner with the skills and technologies that they need to fill the open roles in the IT industry.
