Shelton State Community College Hosts Seventh Shelton’s BEST Robotics Competition

Current Events

October 15, 2018 – Shelton State Community College will host the seventh Shelton’s BEST Robotics Competition on Friday and Saturday, October 26 and 27. Known as “Game Day,” events on Saturday, October 27 will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Game Day activities are open to the public. Admission is free, and community members are invited to volunteer or attend.

Twenty-six schools from West Alabama will compete at the 2018 event. This year’s theme, “Current Events,” will highlight the impact pollution has on the ocean and the planet. In addition to creating preventative strategies, teams are required to create a robotic prototype that will tackle ocean floor clean-up.

“This year’s BEST theme is a great way to bring the topic of ocean pollution to our younger generation and help clear a path to a cleaner environment,” said Beth Rominger from the SSCC Office of Instructional Outreach. “We are looking forward to this impactful event, and we are grateful to all the volunteers who make it a success.”

BEST is a non-profit, volunteer-based program designed to inspire students through competitive robotic design. Through exploration and creativity, student teams are encouraged to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. Additionally, Shelton’s BEST enhances marketing-based skills. The marketing category of competition allows students to brand and advertise their school’s robotic concept. All teams have the opportunity to be mentored by engineers and technical professionals from local industry.

The top four teams participating at Shelton’s BEST will qualify to compete at South’s BEST at Auburn University in December.
