Library Information About Children and Minors

The Shelton State Libraries provide a wide range of resources for students, faculty, staff, and members of the community. The primary purpose of the Shelton State Libraries is to provide information services and bibliographic resources to support the educational needs of students and the instructional needs of faculty, staff, and administrators of Shelton State Community College.

In an effort to provide library services in the best community spirit and to support the college's community service mission, Shelton State's libraries offer limited public services to members of the Tuscaloosa community.  In general, community patrons are expected to use the campus libraries and their resources for educational purposes.  Visitors should be able to demonstrate a valid purpose for being on campus and are expected to abide by the regulations of the institution.  Children on campus for valid purposes should be under the supervision of  parents or appropriate officials and individuals under the age of 14 may not be left unattended in the library.  Any individual who is being disruptive, regardless of age, will be asked to leave immediately.

Community patrons who wish to borrow library materials are required to acquire a Library Card and complete a patron information application, which is available at the Circulation Desk in libraries on both campuses.  Patrons under the age of twelve must have a parent's or guardian's signature of approval on all applications before borrowing privileges are granted.

Parents should note  that the Shelton State Libraries are maintained for adult college students and resources may not be appropriate for children and minors.    The library staff does not assume the role of parent or supervisor for minors and is not responsible for monitoring use of materials, computers, or Internet access for children in either campus library.  Parents must ensure that children and infants brought into the library are quiet and behave appropriately to the environment.   It is not appropriate to bring small children and infants to campus libraries.  There is no circulating book collection for children.
