Health Sciences and the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS-V)

Overview

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS®-V) measures basic essential skills in the academic content area domains of reading, mathematics, science, and English and language usage.

A computerized scholastic aptitude assessment, TEAS®-V is one component of the selection process for admitting students into nursing programs. The goal is to predict candidates with the highest likelihood of academic success.

The objectives assessed on TEAS®-V are those which nurse educators deemed most appropriate and relevant to measure entry level skills and abilities of nursing program applicants.

The MATH subtest covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion. READING covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions. The ENGLISH subtest measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling. The SCIENCE portion of the exam covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.
TEAS®-V is a 170-item, computerized, four-option, multiple-choice assessment. It takes about three and a half (3.5) hours to complete.

Policies

The TEAS®-V test will be administered through the SSCC Testing Center.  Seats for each test session are limited based on room capacity; please choose the desired test session early.
A web-based testing method will be used to administer the TEAS®-V.  SSCC will send the official TEAS score report to another college for a processing fee of $20.00.  Students may repeat the TEAS®-V once during any semester admission time frame. The student must wait at least six (6) weeks between taking each test.  Currently, SSCC administers the TEAS®-V version of the exam, and scores from previous versions will not be accepted for admission.

Students requesting special accommodations, should contact the Director of Testing and Assessment at mkey@sheltonstate.edu before scheduling their testing session.

Study guides may be purchased online at the ATI website, Amazon.com, or Barnes & Noble.  Students needing further information should send an email to testing@sheltonstate.edu.
